This is Mount Diablo in the morning, as seen from just south of Brentwood. The peaceful lake in the foreground reflects the springtime foliage.
Every time I visit Maui, I find new opportunities to capture interesting images. There was rain in the area on this particular afternoon and that made the view even more interesting.
For a photographer, awaking in the middle of the night isn't always a bad thing. When I visit beautiful places, I always keep the camera ready, in case a photo opportunity presents itself. Although the moon was still very bright, the dawn light started to tint the sky a beautiful deep blue. This long exposure shot gives the ocean's surface a unique texture.
I am always glad to have my camera handy. One day earlier this year, we saw this Cedar Waxwing in our back yard. We had never seen one here before and have never seen one here since. They are beautiful birds and I hope they return this fall!
I enjoy photos of flowers because of their color and unique shapes. This image of lavender was taken late in the day and the light from behind the flowers shows the wonderful translucency of their petals.
California is home to some amazing redwood forests. This is a shot was taken in Muir Woods in Marin County. I like this shot, because I was able to make it look as though I was up in the canopy rather than on the ground looking up that these majestic trees.
I’ve always looked at photography as a way to capture shapes like landscapes, cars and other objects, but people are sometimes far more interesting to photograph. Check out the images on the People page. Notice how a situation or mood can change the look of a photo. I enjoy the interaction of light on the human body as well. The human aura adds another dimension of complexity and interest to a photo.
Birds are a constant source of inspiration for me. They accomplish flight with such ease. See the wildlife gallery for more images of birds showing off their skills.
The smooth, liquid lines of a modern car such as an Audi, inspire me. Shooting this image late in the day also highlights the reflectivity of the paint and the bold LED lighting. Modern cars that are designed well represent endless possibilities for stunning photography.
Summer is here and as the weather warms, I think more about warmer tones in photos. This is an example of one of my favorite sunset or "golden hour" photos. The light and humidity have a unique impact on the shapes that your eyes see. This shot was taken on a warm August evening in Sonoma County.
Walking the warm, sunny beaches of Maui is one of my favorite pastimes. Photographers are taught to shoot landscapes, people and other subjects during the "golden hour" around sunrise and sunset. The soft light at these times is beautiful, rendering everything with a golden hue. That's great for some photos, but there is no substitute for mid-day tropical sunlight and a polarizer filter when capturing images of water. I am fascinated with the array of colors visible in these conditions.
Time for a hike in the East Bay hills of Northern California on a cool, spring morning. The spring sunshine has helped the trees grow their leaves and the hills are still green from the winter rains. This narrow "green window" of time brings a wonderful combination of cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures that are perfect for discovering new landscapes to be captured with a camera. Soon the hills will turn a beautiful camel color, but for this brief time, everything remains various stunning shades of green.
Early mornings at Monterey Bay often involve a layer of fog. On this particular morning, I awoke in my east-facing hotel room to a beautiful golden light coming in the window. I grabbed my camera and ran out on the balcony. Below the sun and the layer of fog, I could see faint details of the shoreline. I watched the light change as the sun rose through the varying density of the fog. Eventually a fishing boat cruised by, making a perfect point of interest in the scene. Making this photo reminded me of the importance of stopping to watch a beautiful scene transition over time.
